What is yoga therapy?

Who needs yoga therapy?
Yoga therapy can be helpful for people with various physical and mental health conditions. It can help people who are looking for relief from specific symptoms such as pain, fatigue, insomnia, or depression. I have used yoga therapy to work with people with those symptoms as well as those experiencing anxiety disorders, burnout, bereavement, stress and women's health issues. It is less about learning yoga techniques and more about arriving at a specific treatment plan for the person seeking help.
The International Association of Yoga Therapists defines yoga therapy as "the process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and well-being through the application of the teachings and practices of Yoga." Yoga therapy involves a therapeutic relationship which is person-centred and through personalised assessments, goal-setting, lifestyle management and yoga practices, well-being is restored. Unlike yoga classes, which tend to be more general and group-focused, yoga therapy is unique to you, and uses personalised yoga practices alongside talking and self-enquiry to support you to reconnect with your innate resilience to reduce and/or alleviate your suffering.
How long will it take?
Yoga therapy can take as long or as short as you'd like. It is usually recommended to start with a block of 6 sessions, with an initial assessment session that takes 90 minutes and an additional 5 sessions that are 75 minutes.
What can yoga therapy help with?
Yoga therapy can support:
-
Stress relief
-
Mental clarity
-
Stronger muscles
-
Reductions in pain and pressure
-
Increased balance
-
Better sleep
-
Improved overall physical alignment

How much does it cost?
Each session, whether face-to-face or on-line, costs £80 for each individual session or £450 if you purchase a block of 6 sessions.
What can I expect?
Once you decide yoga therapy is what you need and have completed and returned the consent and intake forms, we will meet for an initial assessment. During the initial assessment, you will discuss your unique needs and, based on that, we create an individualised plan for you that includes specific yoga techniques that you will have tried in the session and you feel are right for you. This might include asana (yoga postures), pranayama (breathing techniques) and/or meditation. It is helpful if practices agreed are undertaken in between sessions, but the frequency of this is determined by your lifestyle and specific needs.

Yoga therapy can complement other kinds of treatment, like medical treatment, massage therapy, medication and many others. If you are having another kind of treatment, speak to your provider to see if they think you might benefit from this therapy, or get in touch to discuss your needs or any questions you might have.
Want to find out if yoga therapy is for you?
Sometimes, taking the first step is the hardest part. If you think yoga therapy might be for you, but you're not sure, get in touch. I may be able to help you decide.
WHAT PEOPLE HAVE SAID...
I found the time and care Debbie has taken with me to ensure that I always worked within what my body can do comfortably reassuring and helpful to me in all movement. The talking parts of the sessions have also been vital in my journey towards feeling better within myself. I have challenged myself to do things differently, I have also been listening and responding to myself. I would definitely do further sessions to check in with this in the future."
"The sessions have been really good. I felt encouraged by Debbie and listened to by her. She adapted the sessions to my needs and I am very grateful."
